Far too many people in New Mexico and beyond have faced true horrors in their past. For many young people, sexual abuse may have been a real life nightmare that they endured once or possibly multiple times. In some cases, abusers are once-trusted individuals who took advantage of young children in schools, group homes or other areas, but this abuse could happen to anyone of any age.
Unfortunately, the effects of being subjected to this type of abuse can be significant and long-lasting. Victims often have numerous issues with their mental health that can often trace back to the abuse. Some common effects that many victims face include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Addiction or substance abuse disorders
- Eating disorders
Sexual abuse is traumatic, and if individuals do not address that trauma, they may continue to suffer from these issues or numerous others. Unfortunately, many people feel shame, embarrassment or fear over what happened to them, and as a result, they do not want to come forward. However, it is important that they know that options exist for seeking justice.
Victims of childhood sexual abuse or those who suffered such abuse in adulthood do not have to feel alone. They also do not have to feel as if their abusers got away with what they did. In some cases, victims may have the option of taking legal action against their abusers, whether the incident happened recently or years ago. Of course, each case is different, and if New Mexico residents feel that this is a path that they would like to consider on their journey to healing, they may want to contact experienced legal professionals for information on their options.
